Chapter 01/The Method

The Shuhari Method — a codified framework for builders who would rather train than hustle.

Three verbs borrowed from classical sword schools, repurposed for measurable modern performance. Master the craft. Move with intent.

§ 1.1/Provenance

Three verbs, one curriculum, no mysticism.

Shuhari is a sequence drawn from the classical Japanese martial canon: Shu — protect and obey the form. Ha — break the form and find your own. Ru — leave the form and act with no separation between training and life. For centuries these three verbs described how a student of sword, calligraphy, or tea graduated from rote imitation to sovereign practice. At Kaiyu Tendo we translate the sequence into a 14-week performance curriculum for founders, executives, and athletes who already know how to ship — and who are tired of training plans that read like motivational wallpaper.

This is not a hustle hack. It is not a meditation retreat dressed in a hakama. It is not an "ancient secret." It is a training manual — written by a former kendo champion and a former McKinsey strategist — that asks you to commit one hour a day, six days a week, and to log every session. The output is meant to be visible: a promotion, a personal record, a fight win, a closed funding round, a quieter morning. If after 90 days the only thing you can show is a journal full of intentions, we have failed you.

What follows is the chapter on how the method is built, what a week inside it looks like, and what ships inside a membership. Read it the way you would read the front matter of a serious training manual — slowly, with a pencil if you have one.

§ 1.2/The Three Phases

Shu. Ha. Ru. — the spine of the curriculum.

Each phase runs a fixed number of weeks and ends with a single observable test. You do not advance on intent; you advance on output.

  1. 01

    Shu — Protect the Form

Weeks 1–4. Learn the prescribed practice.

You adopt the Kaiyu Tendo daily ritual exactly as written: 40 minutes of focused work, 15 minutes of deliberate recovery, 5 minutes of logging. No substitutions. The virtue score, the WHOOP/Oura biometric integration, and the Shuhari handbook all calibrate to your baseline in these four weeks. The work of Shu is obedience.

Readiness test → four consecutive weeks of session completion above 90% and a logged baseline in every tracked metric (sleep, HRV, training load, output cadence).

  2. 02

    Ha — Break the Form

Weeks 5–10. Substitute the parts that do not fit.

With a coach, you begin to rewrite the ritual. The shape is preserved (intensity block, recovery block, log); the content is yours — sparring for a founder in a regulated industry, long-zone endurance for a desk-bound executive, deep-work sprints for a new parent. The virtue score is re-weighted to your stated goal.

Readiness test → one measurable milestone (a closed deal, a published piece, a qualifying comp result, a PR) dated inside the Ha window and logged with evidence.

  3. 03

    Ru — Leave the Form

Weeks 11–14. Train without the scaffolding.

The handbook, the virtue score, and the daily prompt go quiet for a two-week audit. You design and execute your own ritual and bring the log back to your coach for review. The aim is the elimination of dependence on the program itself.

Readiness test → four consecutive weeks of self-designed training, completion above 80%, and a written post-mortem that names what to keep and what to retire.

§ 1.3/A Representative Week

What a member actually does across seven days.

A sample week in the Ha phase for a 38-year-old founder training for a half-marathon while closing a Series A. Drills are mapped to the three phases; the biometric feedback loop is read every morning and adjusted every Sunday.

Mon Ha Threshold intervals — 4 × 8 min @ half-marathon pace HRV dipped 8% overnight; cap intensity one zone lower.
Tue Shu Deep-work block — 90 min single investor memo, no Slack Logged as output: 1,240 words, 1 memo circulated.
Wed Shu Recovery — 40 min mobility, 20 min breath protocol WHOOP recovery 78%; sleep the prior night logged at 7h12.
Thu Ha Easy run — 50 min conversational pace Long-zone endurance; cadence target 178 spm.
Fri Ru Self-designed — investor pitch rehearsal + zone-2 ride Coach check-in scheduled for the following Monday.
Sat Ha Strength block — 45 min posterior chain, heavy hinge Logged in the Shuhari handbook under Ha / strength.
Sun Ru Weekly audit — 30 min log review, biometric digest, plan reset 7/7 sessions logged; one substitution flagged; virtue score recomputed.

§ 1.4/What Ships Inside Membership

Six practice surfaces. No fluff.

  1. i.

    Live coaching sessions

Two 60-minute group calls per week with a roster of 14 — capped, attendance-tracked, no recordings of you without consent. An additional 30-minute 1:1 with your assigned coach each month.

  2. ii.

    The Shuhari handbook

A 184-page training manual in print and PDF. The same volume Sensei Tendo hands to new dojo members in Brooklyn — translated from working notes accumulated since 2017.

  3. iii.

    On-demand drill library

220+ video drills organized by phase and by domain — physical training, deep work, recovery, conflict, communication. Each drill carries a prescribed duration, a substitution, and a logging template.

  4. iv.

    Virtue scoring & biometric integration

A Bushido-derived daily score across six vectors, paired with WHOOP and Oura integrations. The score is yours; the platform never publishes a leaderboard.

  5. v.

    Quarterly alumni intensive

One in-person weekend per quarter, rotating between the Brooklyn and Kyoto dojos. Travel and lodging are member-organized; the curriculum is included.

  6. vi.

    Lifetime alumni Slack

Access to a private network of 11,400 graduates — including a deal-flow and matchmaking channel. Membership in the alumni Slack survives your active subscription.

§ 1.5/By The Numbers

From theory into measurable outcome.

92%

of members hit a stated goal within 90 days — independently verified by Userfeed, Q1 2024.

4,200+

individual members trained across 38 countries since the platform launched in 2017.

1,800+

corporate professionals trained through workshops for Notion, On Running, Shopify, and 14 Fortune 500 firms.

4.9/5

average rating across 2,140 verified reviews on Trustpilot and G2.
